Summer is finally here! Keep yourself safe from the heat with these six health tips.

1. Go outside in off hours

Choose early in the morning or late in the evenings to run your errands, exercise and do yard work. You’ll avoid the hottest and brightest times of the day.

2. Keep your car cool

Park in the shade, crack your windows, never leave pets or children in the car.

3. Wear weather appropriate clothing

Keep shoes on while outside to avoid burns from sidewalks and pavement. Wear loose fitting and light colored clothing. Dark clothes absorb more heat while tight fitting clothes don’t let sweat evaporate. Choose sweat wicking fabrics. Lastly, include sunglasses and a hat when you go outdoors. For max protection, sunglasses should protect against 90 to 100 percent of UV rays.

4. Apply sunscreen

Include sunscreen as part of your daily morning routine. Choose an option with a high SPF that is waterproof.

5. Hydrate

Drink water often throughout the day. Increase water intake when in the heat or exercising. If you want a drink with a bit of flavor, sugar free juice will also hydrate you. Avoid caffeine and alcohol which can both dehydrate you.

6. Eat the right foods

Fruits and vegetables are easy to digest and have a high water content. Spicy foods that cause you to sweat. The sweat will actually cool your body off.

Beware of heat stroke and heat exhaustion. Common symptoms include muscle cramps, flushed skin, vomiting and a racing heart. These can be combated with an increase in water intake, the addition of electrolytes and avoiding the hot summer heat when possible.
