Between COVID-19 and the seasonal flu, everyone is trying to stay as healthy as possible. The CDC recommends that everyone over the age of 6 months gets a flu shot. Beyond that, there are daily steps you can take towards a strong immune system. These healthy habits will help keep you free from sickness this winter.

1. Avoid sick people

The best way to not catch an illness is to distance yourself from people who are sick or may be sick. Similarly, if you are sick, stay home and keep your distance from others to make sure they don’t catch your illness.

2. Wash your hands frequently

The CDC recommends washing your hands for at least 20 seconds (or the time it takes to hum the “Happy Birthday” song twice) with soap and water. If you are unable to wash your hands, use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol content.

3. Limit contact with your eyes, nose and mouth

A great way to not spread germs, is to limit touch to your eyes, nose and mouth. This can prevent you from spreading a sickness to someone else but it also can keep you from getting sick. Even if you touch a contaminated surface, as long as you don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth, you can keep yourself healthy.

4. Clean and disinfect regularly touched surfaces

Germs are constantly moving. Wipe down anything that is frequently touched with an alcohol based disinfectant.

5. Get enough sleep

Rest and sleep are powerful tools to help your body fight off illnesses. Aim to get 7-8 hours of sleep per night to keep you body fighting and keep you healthy.

6. Consume healthy food and drink

Eating healthy foods will give your body the nutrients it needs to fight sickness and help you feel energized. Experts recommend healthy eating to boost immunity and fight the flu. They recommend incorporating lots of fruits, vegetables, lean protein, healthy fats, and whole grains into your diet.

7. Manage stress

Managing stress also manages your immune system. Stress weakens the immune system, according to the American Psychological Association. In turn, spending time with loved ones and relaxing strengthens the immune system.

Apply these 7 healthy habits daily to feel stronger, stay healthy and have a better chance at fighting off sickness during this year’s flu season.
