What are the top X-Ray requests? There are many types of X-rays. The most common ones are chest, fractures, mammography and for urinary tract conditions.

1. Chest X-rays

Chest X-rays are the most common type of diagnostic x-ray. It’s photos show the heart, lungs, blood vessels, airways, chest, spine and bones.

They can detect cancer, infection or air near the lungs. Patients who experience shortness of breath, chest pain, persistent cough, fever, or injury can benefit from getting a chest X-ray.

2. Fractures

Bone X-rays are the fastest and easiest way for medical professionals to view, assess and diagnose bone fractures, injuries and joint dislocations. Patients or their doctors who suspect a bone or joint injury can benefit from undergoing a simple X-ray.

3. Mammography

A mammogram is a breast X-ray which is used to diagnose and monitor breast cancer. This type of X-ray looks for masses and microclarifications. Routine mammograms can detect breast cancer in an early stage and for this reason is often recommended for women every two years after age 55. However, there is also evidence that women younger than 55 can benefit from occasional mammograms. Your doctor will also have you get a mammogram if they suspect you may have breast cancer.

4. Urinary Tract Conditions

Kidney and bladder X-rays are also common requests. These X-rays may be beneficial if you have abdominal pain or recurring infections. They can diagnose cancers, injuries and infections.
